GUARDIAN INFORMATION
Volunteer "guardians" play a special role in each Honor Flight. Guardians are critical to the success of each flight. Their financial contribution helps pay for the flight, and their contribution of time and attention helps keep the day safe and memorable for our heroes from this 'greatest generation' ! And....as in most cases.....those who volunteer usually come back knowing they received more than they gave. It is a memorable day for all.
The following is general information about the 'guardian' role and selection process, in response to frequently asked questions.
- Guardians are there to provide for the safety and comfort of our honorees.
- Guardians accompany our veteran honorees for the privilege of saying 'thank you for my freedom' in a personal way.
- Guardians are not tourists just along for the ride, they are there to work and to serve heroes, whether it is pushing a wheelchair, lending an ear, taking pictures, loading wheelchairs onto the bus, or simply making sure each guest has water, snacks, meals, etc.
- Guardians generally are responsible for serving 1, 2, or 3 veterans throughout the day.
- For independent veterans, one guardian may be assigned up to 3 veterans to be available for whatever they may need throughout the day.
- Veterans who may need assistance due to problems with sight, mobility, etc., will have one specific guardian assigned solely to them throughout the day.
- Guardians receive safety training and trip information at mandatory pre-flight sessions.
- Guardians are selected according to the needs of the traveling WWII veterans. Depending upon the needs identified, when selecting guardians, preference is given to later era veterans when possible. (Unfortunately, we must ask guardians who are veterans themselves to also make the required guardian contribution.)
- Guardians are usually NOT family members, although if a veteran needs 1 to 1 assistance during the day, willing and able family members will be considered.
- We cannot take a WWII veteran's spouse on the trip unless that person is also a WWII veteran.
- We cannot take a WWII veteran's spouse as a guardian.
- Veterans are NOT responsible for recruiting their guardians. We maintain a list of volunteers who have applied for this honor.
- If a family member is chosen, they must be next generation or beyond and capable of meeting the needs of the veteran. This requires the ability to walk an estimated 4 miles throughout the day, and may require the ability to push a wheelchair most of the day.
- Special note to families: Family members who wish to accompany their parent, grandparent, aunt/uncle, etc. should submit an application NOW and indicate who they wish to accompany. Once a flight is scheduled and veterans are confirmed, we start assigning guardians from our list of volunteers. We choose guardians according to the needs of the veterans. We will not 'bump' a confirmed guardian in response to a later application from a friend or family member. By this time, these volunteers have already arranged for time off work and committed themselves to the day.
- Getting WWII veterans to their memorial in as safe a manner as possible is priority #1. Due to that, we cannot promise individual guardians specific flights. While veterans are selected according to date of application, that is not the case with guardians. We have a lot of details to consider when selecting guardians. We also try to select a few 'repeat' guardians on each flight to add experience, which is another safety factor. If you have applied and have not yet had the opportunity to fly, please be patient. Feel free to call or email if you want to confirm that your application was received.
We have been fortunate to have such a great response to requests for Guardians. If you are interested, we need your help! We are taking large planes now and need more Guardians per flight. Please submit your application today! You can download the application by clicking the following link: Volunteer Guardian Application.
Guardians are required to make a contribution to help cover their own expenses. For the next flight, the required contribution is $400. This price may continue to rise as airline prices rise.
